LASTMA Official Not Actually Killed By Banker?

On Friday, 10th August, there was news that Yinka Johnson, a female banker with Stanbic IBTC, ran over and killed a LASTMA official. This was in the process of trying to evade the LASTMA officials after being caught driving against traffic. Today, it seems that the information that made the news is false as an eyewitness has given a different account of what happened. The eyewitness who was at the scene of the incident said that the LASTMA official was hit by a danfo driver and not by the banker. The eyewitness claimed that the banker's car was stationary when the incident occured. The eyewitness also said that the Danfo had its windscreen broken while there was no sign of an impact on the banker's car.
Here is Yinka's version of the incident:

I was driving on Lekki-Epe Expressway trying to navigate to the other side of the road when I was accosted by a LASTMA official. The path I took was a one-way road but residents of Ikota Estate usually take it because of the ongoing road reconstruction on the alternative road. While I was discussing with the LASTMA official, a vehicle crushed another official a few metres away, causing commotion. I did not run from the crime scene as it was not far from my home but instead came down from my car and called my husband.
After the LASTMA officials drove my car away, I went to the police station with my husband to report the incident. When I got to the police station, the area commander immediately took over the case and took me to the office of the commissioner of police. I heard the state governor had already told him about the case.
When I narrated my ordeal to the CP, he did not believe my story. He immediately ordered that I should be taken to the SCID. I am the innocent person here, yet I am being made to pay for what I did not do.

So for some unknown reason, the LASTMA authorities are trying to pin the alleged crime on Johnson.
Yinka Johnson is a mother of 3, her last child being 2 months old and is with her in detention.

Two Police Stations in Sokoto Bombed

Information has it that multiple bomb blasts have hit two police stations in separate parts of Sokoto, Monday morning. Sources say the attacks were carried out by suicide bombers suspected to be members of the Islamic militant sect, Boko Haram.
Sokoto is one of the few Northern states that have so far remained peaceful since the Boko Haram rampage in the North began. Monday’s first attack was reported to have been targeted at the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police in the city at Marina.
This attack has left at least one police officer dead while several other people were injured, including policemen on duty. However, more details on the attack are yet to be given.
The second blast which was also reported was said to have hit Unguwar Rogo Police station in the Sokoto metropolis. No information about the casualty – if there are any – of this second attack has been gotten yet. Sokoto is the second state in the North in which there have been attacks on Monday alone. The attacks are also coming against a background of intense pressure on the president from the international community, about the security situation of the country.

Dana Air Pilot’s Last Conversation With Air Traffic Controller

"Good day!" These were the last two words the courageous pilot told air traffic controllers before the Dana Air flight 0992 crashed into a residential building in Iju-Ishaga, Lagos, killing all the 153 people on board and 10 people on ground on Sunday, June 3, 2012.
The transcription of the last conversation between the air traffic controller and the crew revealed that the pilots did everything to land the aircraft safely on Runway 18 Right of the Murtala Muhammed Airport.
The recording, a copy of which was obtained exclusively from a top official of the Ministry of Aviation on Monday by our correspondent, showed that the flight crew did not lose hope even up till the last second before the aircraft crashed.
The crew had believed the aircraft would make it to Runway 18R of the Lagos airport.
The transcription revealed that the aircraft had indeed lost its two engines, shortly after which the pilot declared an emergency.

46-Year-Old Man Cured Of HIV

Man Cured of AIDS: 'I Feel Good' (ABC News)

The fact that Timothy Brown is a reasonably healthy 46-year-old is no small thing. Only a few years ago, he had AIDS.
"I feel good," Brown told ABC News. "I haven't had any major illnesses, just occasional colds like normal people."
Brown is the only person in the world to be cured of AIDS, the result of a transplant of blood stem cells he received to treat leukemia.
"My case is the proof in concept that HIV can be cured," he said.
Brown got lucky. The blood stem cells he received came from a donor with a special genetic mutation that made him resistant to HIV. The genetic mutation occurs in less than 1 percent of Caucasians, and far less frequently in people of other races. Before Brown got his transplant in 2007, doctors tested nearly 70 donors for this genetic mutation before they found one who was a match.
But doctors hope that a similar solution could help other people with HIV: umbilical cord blood transplants.
Dr. Lawrence Petz, medical director of StemCyte, an umbilical cord blood bank, said although Brown was cured by his transplant, the process was complicated because the blood stem cells came from an adult donor.
"When you do that you have to have a very close match between donor and recipient," Petz said. "With umbilical cord blood, we don't need such a close match. It's far easier to find donor matches."
But it's still not that easy. Petz and his colleagues have tested 17,000 samples of cord blood so far, and found just 102 that have the genetic HIV-resistant mutation. The team performed the first cord blood transplant on an HIV-infected patient a few weeks ago, and they have another transplant planned for a similar patient in Madrid, Spain, later this year. It will still be months before researchers can tell if the transplants have any effect on the patients' HIV.
Petz also noted that transplants aren't performed solely to treat AIDS. Patients who get them have an additional condition that requires a blood stem cell transplant. Curing their AIDS would be an incredible bonus.
"It can be done. It's just a matter of time," Petz said.
Brown had his transplant in February 2007. Today, his body shows no signs of the virus.
Brown said he feels guilty being the only person to have been cured of the virus when millions still live with it. But he hopes his story will inspire others that a cure is possible.
"I don't want to be the only person in the world cured of HIV. I want a cure for everyone," he said.

PC Browsing With Etisalat Blackberry Subscription

A lot of people have brought to my attention the stoppage of an MTN browsing trick which i posted earlier. Well I have decided to proffer an alternative to that though this time it involves using Etisalat instead.
On your modem interface, simply create an access point with the following details
apn: blackberry.net
Leave the username and password empty.
Click on advanced and add this to the DNS settings
Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8
Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4
Then save and connect with it.
On your browser, configure to use these settings:
Proxy address 10.71.170.5 and port 8080
You must have subscribed to the etisalat blackberry plan at least once after which you won't need the subscription to be active before using it. What i mean is that you can still browse with it after the subscription expires.
To subscribe for the etisalat blackberry daily plan, simply dial *499*2*2#. It costs N100 and uses auto-renewal. This means that the subscription is automatically renewed the following day if you have up to N100 airtime on your sim.

First Lady's Presidential Jet Prevented the Dana Plane From Landing?

Rumour has it that the Dana plane was distressed for a while and couldn't make an emergency landing because the airspace was closed for two hours for the presidential Jet carrying the first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan. The story is said to have been leaked by private jet owners who had to hover in the air at that same time.

It is also apparently the reason that our local news stations didn't report the crash for a while until foreign news stations started reporting it as the local news stations were 'blacked out' trying to kill the story of the airspace being closed.
However, the Special Assistant Media to the Hon. Minister of Aviation, Joe Obi, released a statement which stated that the rumour was false. Part of the statement reads,

“The Federal Ministry of Aviation will like to clarify that nothing could be farther from the truth.  For the records, we wish to state that the First Lady arrived in Lagos at about 4.45p.m. on Saturday, 2nd June, 2012 and only departed for Abuja on Monday, the 4th of June, 2012 at 1.30p.m., whereas the ill-fated Dana flight 0992 departed Abuja on Sunday, 3rd of June, 2012 at 2.54p.m. and its last contact with the Lagos Control Tower was at 3.42p.m. as has already been announced.
We wish to stress that the First Lady did not fly on Sunday, the 3rd of June, 2012 as is widely been speculated”.
Whether the rumour is actually true or not, we don't know. But if it actually is, then it's a big shame. A very big shame.

Another Student Hangs Himself, Says Goodbye Via Facebook

What is it with students committing suicide these days? Ayodeji Balogun (whose picture is shown below), a student of the National Open University, Lagos, was found hanging from a mango tree at his residence in Ipaja, Lagos.

He made a post on his facebook page yesterday evening which says. "what they said about me is nt true in school but God know better thanks we see at the END i luv u all".

What gossip or rumour could have been so bad that he had to kill himself for it? May his soul rest in peace.

FG Withdraws Operating License of Dana Airlines

Following the crash of the Dana airlines plane which left 153 people dead on Sunday, 3rd June, 2012, the Federal Government this afternoon announced the withdrawal of the operating licence of Dana Airlines.
Mr. Ben Nnaji, a trained Aerospace Systems Engineer disclosed that he had the same plane was delayed from take off on the 23rd of May, 2012 due to a hydraulic problem. He said he saw some philippine mechanics draining hydraulic fluid from the plane take out a part of the plane. They were told to board the plane without that part being replaced. He pointed out the operational state of the plane to the flight supervisor, who directed him to the pilot. The pilot assured him that the plane was in a good enough condition to fly. Though the plane flew at that moment with no incidence, it should have been taken off service for proper repairs to be performed on it.
According to a Dana Air employee who called in an anonymous tip regarding the same plane, the Indian bosses forced the crew to fly the aircraft in order to maximise profits at the expense of human lives.
The management of Dana Air is expected to pay at least $100,000 as insurance claims for each of the 153 passengers who lost their lives to the crash. This is in line with the requirement of the International Civil Aviation Organization(ICAO). Dana Air is also expected to pay $250,000 to the families of each of the two pilots, as well as $150,000 to the families of each of the six crew members.
Meanwhile, the Senate today ordered the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Harold Demuren, to step aside pending the conclusion of the investigations into the plane crash.

The plane is said to have made an emergency landing last month and should have been grounded but rather, the NCAA praised the pilots for a job well done.

Charles Taylor Sentenced To Fifty Years Imprisonment

Charles Taylor, former Liberian President, who has been undergoing trial for helping rebels commit some of the worst war crimes in history, has been jailed for 50 years. The sentence was less than the 80 years which was sought by the prosecution. Edward Conteh, a Sierra Leonean who lost his left arm to the rebels said, "Taylor is now 64 years old, I know that he cannot do 50 years in prison, so I'm satisfied." The presiding judge of the Special Court for Sierra Leone, Richard Lussick, described some of the most hideous atrocities which include the amputations of limbs which became a hallmark of the conflict, the gang rape victim whose eyes were torn out so she couldn't identify the perpetrators, the mother forced to carry a bag of human heads - including those of her children. "She was forced to laugh while carrying the bag dripping with blood," Lussick said. "She saw the heads of her children."
The sentence will be served at a high security prison in Britain and the six years he spent during the trial will count against his term. Taylor's defense lawyer said that rather than promoting international justice, the sentence would only encourage embattled leaders to fight to the end, rather than give in and face possible trial. The defence said it would appeal the sentence, claiming that the prosecution made payments to its witnesses.

Reactions From UNILAG. Or Should I Say MAU

Following the recent change of name of the former University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University by President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday, during a democracy day broadcast, students of the university have embarked on a protest in which they have blocked both sides of the Third Mainland Bridge.

The school authority has also asked all students to vacate the premises before 11am this morning as the school will be shut down for two weeks. And it doesn't end there. According to Linda Ikeji, the school ALUMNI has taken the federal government to court over the renaming.
